FDA has issued a final rule that revises regulations on tolerances for residues of approved new animal drugs in food.
The rule, which takes effect Sept. 9, standardizes and simplifies the tolerance standards and provide definitions for key terms, the agency said. It finalizes most of the provisions of the 2012 proposed rule, as revised by a 2016 supplemental proposed rule.
The tolerance information is intended to ensure the safety of veterinary drug use in food-producing animals. Major provisions of the final rule cover acceptable daily intake, acute reference dose, edible tissues, marker residue and other conditions for use of the drug.
