U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin are expected to fly to Shanghai today for trade talks on Tuesday and Wednesday, as Trump's top negotiators try to "reset" discussions with China after they broke down in May, writes Pro Trade's Doug Palmer.

— What's on the agenda? Lots of big-ticket items including agriculture, intellectual property, forced technology transfers, the trade deficit and enforcement, the White House said last week.

— What's at stake for farmers? Trump is still seeking major Chinese agricultural purchases from the U.S., following his short-term truce with President Xi Jinping in late June. Beijing last week approved new wheat and soybean imports from Russia, however, as those two countries look to ramp up their ag-trade activities. (Reuters has more on that.)

Next up, Japanese Economic Revitalization Minister Toshimitsu Motegi is scheduled to visit Washington on Thursday for trade talks with Lighthizer, the trade chief's office told our Pro Trade colleagues. The U.S. and Japan are gunning for a limited trade agreement in the coming weeks or months aimed at agriculture and automobiles.

Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe are expected to meet up in late August at the G-7 gathering in France, and again in late September at the U.N. General Assembly meeting in New York — two chances for them to sign or shake hands on a mini-deal.

Don't forget about US(MCA): House Democrats last week said they're awaiting a formal response from Lighthizer on their proposed changes to the new NAFTA deal. Pro Trade's Sabrina Rodriguez has the details.

Big picture: As all of these negotiations come to a head, the next five months could reshape global trade for years to come, Doug writes this a.m.
