State Farmers Market Restaurant to close Jan. 11 for repairs, renovations

The State Farmers Market Restaurant is taking a break from serving up ham biscuits and other country fare so that it can undergo needed repairs and renovations. The restaurant will close at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, and will reopen Saturday, March 7.
The eight-week project will involve repairs to the kitchen walls, drains and floor, plus work on heating and air-conditioning ducts. A new cooler and freezer will be installed, and the flooring in the dining room will be replaced.
Gypsy Gilliam has operated the State Farmers Market Restaurant since 2002. She leases the space from the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, which oversees the market.
Gilliam and department officials agreed that temporarily closing the restaurant was the best way to handle the repairs to the building, which opened in 1991, said Kent Yelverton, director of property and construction for the department.
“We are committed to meeting the March 7 reopening date, so that the project’s impact on the restaurant’s employees and customers is as small as possible,” Yelverton said.
The State Farmers Market will cover the cost of the project. Sears Hackney Keener & Williams Inc. of Cary is the project architect. C.T. Wilson Construction Co. of Durham is the contractor.
Gilliam said customers will notice other changes when the restaurant reopens. Patio seating will be available, and the restaurant will be open for dinner on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
