North Carolina cotton production estimate up

“We recognize this is a hectic time of the year for farmers and we want to express our sincere appreciation for their time and effort in participating in the monthly Agricultural Yield Survey,” said Dee Webb, North Carolina State Statistician.

“By responding, the growers provided essential information for crop yields that helped determine monthly production forecasts. Their responses also helps the farming community, related agriculture industries and ensures USDA bases it decisions on the most accurate data.” 

Corn for grain

• Yield is forecast at 110 bushels per acre, down 3 bushels from last year’s yield of 113 bushels per acre.

• Production is forecast to total 97.9 million bushels, up 4% from the 93.8 million bushels produced last year.

• Harvested acres are forecast at 890,000, up from 830,000 acres harvested in 2018. 

Cotton

• Yield is forecast at 912 pounds per acre, up 100 pounds from last year’s yield of 812 pounds per acre.

• Production is forecast at 940,000 bales, up 34% from last year’s production of 702,000 bales.

• Harvested acres are expected to total 495,000 acres compared with 415,000 acres harvested in 2018.

Peanuts

• Yield per acre is forecast at 3,800 pounds, down 100 pounds per acre from last year’s estimate.

• Production is forecast at 372.4 million pounds, down 3% from last year’s production of 382.2 million.

• Harvested acres are projected at 98,000 acres, are unchanged from 2018.

Soybeans

• Yield is forecast to average 38 bushels per acre, up 4 bushels from last year’s yield of 34 bushels.

• Production is forecast to total 58.1 million bushels, up 9% from last year’s production of 53.4 million bushels.

• Harvested acres are projected at 1.53 million acres, down 40,000 acres from last year.

Flue-Cured Tobacco

• Yield per acre is forecast at 2,000 pounds, up 350 pounds per acre from last year.

• Production is forecast at 244 million pounds, down 3% from last year’s production of 250.8 million pounds.

• Harvested acres are projected at 122,000 acres, down 30,000 acres from 2018. 

Winter Wheat

• Yield is forecast to average 50 bushels, down 7 bushels per acre from 2018.

• Production is forecast to total 11.3 million bushels, down 47% from last year’s production of 21.1 million bushels.

• Harvested acres are projected at 225,000 acres, down 145,000 acres from last year.
