The announcement of new U.S.-China trade talks next month sent stocks higher Thursday, though the two sides remain far apart and still plan to hit each other with punishing new tariffs. The Dow Jones industrial average jumped nearly 400 points, or 1.4 percent, to close at 26,728. The broader Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index rose 1.3 percent, while the technology-heavy Nasdaq jumped 1.8 percent.
