About 80 to 100 workers will be laid off from Pilgrim's Pride's Athens, Ga., poultry plant Feb. 9 when the Pittsburg, Texas-based company eliminates the second shift there to cut costs, the Athens Banner-Herald reported.

More than 200 workers will be affected by the move, although Pilgrim's Pride plans to move some to the first shift and others to the company's supply division in Athens, spokesman Ray Atkinson told the newspaper.

The cuts are just the latest announced by Pilgrim's Pride, which also decided last month to eliminate the second shift at a Florida facility. The processor filed for bankruptcy protection in early December.
