The world needs plant breeding innovations to effectively address challenges associated with climate change and a growing population, a new report says. More resource-efficient farming systems are needed to feed the world as the population increases, and plant breeding innovations can make agricultural production more efficient, according to the study, which was published in the August 2019 issue of the Transgenic Research journal.Improved plant varieties developed through new breeding techniques have better capacity to withstand pests and diseases, while using fewer resources, the report notes. They also offer stable yields in an unstable climate and can improve productivity through efficient use of water, land and nutrients.
