Youth livestock program a tribute to Madison County's farming history

A blue ribbon at the Madison County Fair is up for grabs for a handful of students taking their first steps towards a life in farming, steps they’ll be taking alongside 6-month-old calves. Twice each week, 12 students as young as third graders meet at a small barn near the Madison County Animal Shelter for the Madison 4-H Dairy Project. There they learn how to meet the basic needs of dairy calves born in the spring and how to manage the otherwise untrained animals.
