Oct. crop report: USDA forecasts decreased yields for North Carolina compared to last month

“NC soybeans, cotton and tobacco are showing a decrease in expected yield as compared to the September 1 forecast, however peanuts showed a slight increase in expected yield.” said Dee Webb, North Carolina State Statistician. 

”On a monthly basis producers provide essential information that helps determine these forecasts. This information is important to producers and others in the agriculture industry as they plan and prepare for the coming months. We would like to thank the producers for their time and support during a very busy time of the year.” 

Corn for grain • Yield is forecast at 110 bushels per acre, down 3 bushels from last year’s yield of 113 bushels per acre. • Production is forecast to total 100.1 million bushels, up 7% from the 93.8 million bushels produced last year. • Harvested acres are forecast at 910,000, up from 830,000 acres harvested in 2018. 

Cotton • Yield is forecast at 921 pounds per acre, up 109 pounds from last year’s yield of 812 pounds per acre. • Production is forecast at 950,000 bales, up 35% from last year’s production of 702,000 bales. • Harvested acres are expected to total 495,000 acres compared with 415,000 acres harvested in 2018.

Peanuts • Yield per acre is forecast at 4,300 pounds, up 430 pounds per acre from last year’s estimate. • Production is forecast at 434.3 million pounds, up 15% from last year’s production of 379.3 million. • Harvested acres are projected at 101,000 acres, an increase of 3,000 acres from 2018. 

Soybeans • Yield is forecast to average 37 bushels per acre, up 4 bushels from last year’s yield of 33 bushels. • Production is forecast to total 56.6 million bushels, up 9% from last year’s production of 51.8 million bushels. • Harvested acres are projected at 1.53 million acres, down 40,000 acres from last year.
