A federal court halted the Trump administration's so-called public charge regulation, which was due to take effect today, reports POLITICO's Ted Hesson. The Manhattan-based judge wrote that the administration failed to "articulate why they are changing the public charge definition, why this new definition is needed now, or why the definition set forth in the rule — which has absolutely no support in the history of U.S. immigration law — is reasonable."

The White House called the ruling "extremely disappointing" in a statement, blaming the court for stopping immigration officials from "ensuring that immigrants seeking entry to the U.S. will be self-sufficient" and allowing "non-citizens to continue taking advantage of our generous but limited public resources reserved for vulnerable Americans."

Critics of the regulation have argued that it would discourage immigrants and their family members from accessing food and health care, even in cases they're entitled to receive it.
