House Agriculture Livestock and Foreign Agriculture Subcommittee Chairman Jim Costa of California released the following statement after a briefing from Ambassador Gregg Doud of the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative:

“I appreciate Ambassador Doud’s visit today and his candor in discussing the range of trade issues impacting our farm and food families nationwide. As I said to him, trade is so important to farmers in California and around our country. The importance of a timely end to this trade war cannot be overstated, and given what the Administration has put farmers through, new agreements must give them more than they had before,” said Costa. “While the recent Japan deal provides progress, there is more we need to build on.” 

I am also concerned about the initial possible China agreement. We need to see more details on what China is agreeing to and how we will be able to ensure enforcement. We must continue to work together on these bipartisan trade agreements because, as I have said many times, no one wins a trade war.”
