National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) President & North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring issued the following statement today after the introduction of the Farm Workforce Modernization Act (FWMA) by Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) and Congressman Dan Newhouse (R-WA):

“Meeting the labor needs in specific sectors of the agriculture workforce is essential to U.S.-based agricultural production and food security. We thank Congresswoman Lofgren and Congressman Newhouse for their leadership in introducing this bipartisan bill and taking the first step towards addressing some of the workforce challenges that our farmers and ranchers currently face. We acknowledge that a multi-faceted effort is needed to fix the challenges with ag labor, so any progress made on this front is a step in the right direction.  We look forward to advancing solutions to agriculture’s labor shortage with Congress.”

NASDA is a nonpartisan, nonprofit association which represents the elected and appointed commissioners, secretaries, and directors of the departments of agriculture in all fifty states and four U.S. territories.  NASDA grows and enhances agriculture by forging partnerships and creating consensus to achieve sound policy outcomes between state departments of agriculture, the federal government, and stakeholders.
