Bank towers rise, expressways open, major league sports franchises come to town. North Carolina’s future as told by news headlines is most often about its cities, and can seem as golden as a groundbreaking shovel. But it’s not the full story. In the sprawling rural lands that grew the state’s roots, too many places include darkened small-town storefronts and silent textile mills.
