December 2019 Hog Report

All hogs and pigs on North Carolina farms on December 1, 2019 totaled 9.2 million head, down 3% from September 1 but unchanged from last year. Market hogs, at 8.3 million head, was unchanged from last year but down 3% from last quarter. Breeding stock at 900,000 head was unchanged from December 1 of last year. The State’s pig crop during the September – November 2019 period totaled 4.85 million head, up 1% from the same period last year. These pigs were produced by 460,000 sows, down 3% from 2018.

Pigs saved per litter averaged at 10.55, which is up from the 10.15 pigs saved during the same quarter last year. North Carolina producers intend to farrow 460,000 sows during the December 2019 – February 2020 quarter and 470,000 sows during the March – May 2020 quarter. North Carolina ranks 2nd nationally, behind Iowa, in the total number of hogs and pigs produced.
