Out in an open field on Marvin Winstead’s Nash County farmland is a sprawling pine tree. It is tall and full, having no competition around it to hold back its growth. “It’s just an ordinary, everyday Southern pine,” Winstead said. But the tree has a special significance to the Winstead family history. “It is unique in that is happens to be out in the middle of a field. It’s located in a place where there used to be a pasture a long time ago. As often happens, trees sprout up along the fence line,” Winstead said.
