Maintaining high water quality standards ensures North Carolinians have access to clean drinking water, healthy fish, and safe recreation on the state’s rivers, lakes, and beaches. But doing so is expensive, both through direct costs like pollution control technology as well as through limitations placed on land use or other production decisions.
