 For 56 years, a scrubber stack was a towering part of an energy era here in the mountains. Overnight, it became a relic of the past. "It's an exciting moment, but also a bittersweet day," says spokesperson Jason Walls. At 4 p.m. Wednesday, Duke Energy officially retired the Asheville coal plant in Arden.
