North Carolina has about 18.1 million acres of timberland, which supports a vibrant forest product industry throughout the state. Timberland is the main land use type covering 58% of the total land in the state. In 2018, the total stumpage value of timber harvest, the value that landowners received for their standing timber, was about $483.1 million, up 3.6% from 2017. Moreover, the total value that mills paid (i.e., the delivered value) was about $950 million, up 3.8% from 2017. According to 2017 US Forest Service Timber Product Output (TPO) survey, while sawtimber harvested quantity was down 2% to about 306.4 million cubic feet, total pulpwood harvest quantity was up 16% to 379.5 million cubic feet in 2017. Beaufort from Northeast, Columbus and Brunswick from Southeast were the top three counties in terms of the 2018 delivered values, respectively.
