Trump steps up stimulus, crackdown

The president on Wednesday night announced he's suspending all travel from the EU for the next 30 days (but not the U.K.) — though officials later clarified that the restrictions only apply to foreign nationals. Trump also promised "unprecedented" emergency action to bring financial relief to workers and businesses who are affected by the virus, including initial steps to defer tax payments for businesses and individuals, a move Trump said would inject $200 billion in liquidity to the economy.

One option that's not on the table? White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said there are still "no discussions" of suspending tariffs on steel and aluminum imports or a wide range of Chinese goods, despite growing pressure from business groups and interest among lawmakers. Navarro called the idea "absurd" and "simply a fake news gambit," reports Pro Trade's Megan Cassella.

Pork producers are warning that the coronavirus could worsen the ag labor shortage on hog farms and in slaughterhouses. The National Pork Producers Council sent a letter to the White House and lawmakers this week asking for federal action, such as expedited worker visas and support for farmers affected by supply-chain bottlenecks, to avert a "serious market disruption with catastrophic implications for hog farmers."

The American Farm Bureau Federation cancelled its annual Young Farmers and Ranchers Conference, which was scheduled for this weekend in Louisville, Ky.
