All hogs and pigs on North Carolina farms on March 1, 2020 totaled 9.2 million head, down 2% from December 1, 2019. Market hogs, at 8.3 million head, were up 3% from last year and down 2% from last quarter. Breeding stock totaled 870,000 head, down 3% from both last year and last quarter. The State’s pig crop during the December 2019 – February 2020 period totaled 4.73 million head, up 5% from the same period last year. These pigs were produced by 450,000 sows. Pigs saved per litter averaged 10.5 compared to the 9.9 pigs saved during the same quarter last year. North Carolina producers intend to farrow 450,000 sows during both the March–May and June–August 2020 quarters. North Carolina ranks 3 rd nationally in the total number of hogs and pigs produced.
