Gaining Ground farmer Aaron Grier calls Rhubarb and Benne chef and owner John Fleer a "bellwether."
Merriam-Webster traces that word to when shepherds hung a bell around the neck of one sheep, designating it the leader of the flock. "If every farm had a John Fleer, our agricultural landscape would be transformed around Asheville," Grier said. "That sounds dramatic, but it's fact."
