Top farm ministers from G-20 nations agreed to ensure that food, supplies and other essential agricultural products continue to flow freely across national borders amid the coronavirus pandemic, writes Pro Trade's Adam Behsudi.

Several nations have imposed export restrictions on food and farm goods, but the measures so far have done little to distort world markets. Still, trade experts warn that if such restrictions continue or expand, it could threaten poorer countries with less food security. Similarly, farm analysts predict that less access to inputs like fertilizer could lead to smaller crop yields and more global hunger.

Following a virtual meeting on Tuesday, the G-20 ag ministers pledged to "guard against any unjustified restrictive measures that could lead to excessive food price volatility in international markets and threaten the food security and nutrition of large proportions of the world population."
