NC June 2020 Hog Report

All hogs and pigs on North Carolina farms on June 1, 2020 totaled 9.4 million head, up 2% from last quarter and last year. Market hogs, at 8.5 million head, were up 3% from last year. Breeding stock totaled 880,000 head, down 2% from last year.

The State’s pig crop during the March–May 2020 period totaled 4.88 million head, up 1% from the same period last year. These pigs were produced by 460,000 sows. Pigs saved per litter averaged 10.6, which is up from the 10.5 pigs saved during the same quarter last year.

North Carolina producers intend to farrow 460,000 sows during the June– August 2020 quarter and 455 sows during the September–November 2020 quarter. North Carolina currently ranks 3 rd nationally, behind Iowa and Minnesota, in the total number of hogs and pigs produced.
