Farmers start harvesting tobacco: Cold, wet weather hurt this year’s crop

Wilson County farmers have started harvesting tobacco, but it’s been tough getting to this point. “The year 2020 has just presented one challenge after another for our country, our state and particularly our farmers,” said Norman Harrell, director of the N.C. Cooperative Extension office in Wilson County. “The weather has been extreme.” Farmers dealt with excessive rain and one of the coolest months of June on record. “That caused all of our crops to grow slower just because of the cooler June, but temperatures have now warmed up, and crops are responding to the warmer temperatures and growing,” Harrell said.
