Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler released the following statement regarding Gov. Roy Cooper’s issuance of Executive Order No. 154 in preparation for Hurricane Isaias:

“With the potential impact of Hurricane Isaias and the threat for agricultural damage, I appreciate Gov. Cooper issuing a state of emergency for North Carolina. At my recommendation and as allowed by state law, the Governor has directed the Department of Public Safety to temporarily suspend weighing vehicles used to transport livestock, poultry, or crops including timber ready to be harvested and feed to livestock and poultry in the emergency area. The order also waives the maximum hours of service allowed for drivers.

“This Executive Order, while not a blanket waiver on weight limits, will allow our farmers to prepare for possible flooding and wind damage from this storm to their crops and farming operations. The orders also will help ensure that livestock, poultry and feed can be moved as necessary.

“Although this storm may change course, we are monitoring the situation closely, and are working proactively because we still have a number of crops in fields. We urge everyone to take this situation seriously and take precautions as the storm moves toward North Carolina.”
