News reporting at its best should be about nuance. Despite what 60 Minutes might have you believe, there are rarely 'black hats’ and 'white hats’ when it comes to understanding issues. Life is usually gray—nuanced, complex. When reporters address controversial issues, it’s not enough to just get the bulk of a story 'right’; the headline and the editorial thrust of the story should responsibly reflect the multi-dimensionality of a topic, otherwise a story can muddy the understanding of a complex issues and ultimately undermine both science and the public’s trust in journalists.
