NC September 2020 hog report

All hogs and pigs on North Carolina farms on September 1, 2020 totaled 9.6 million head, up 2% from June 1. Market hogs, at 8.7 million head, were up slightly from last year and up 2% from last quarter. Breeding stock totaled 870,000 head, down 3% from last year and down 1% from June 1, 2020. The State’s pig crop during the June – August 2020 period totaled 5.0 million head, down 4% from the same period last year. These pigs were produced by 480,000 sows; a 4% decrease from 2019. Pigs saved per litter averaged at 10.5, unchanged from the same quarter last year. North Carolina producers intend to farrow 445,000 sows during the September – November 2020 quarter and 450,000 sows during the December 2020 – February 2021 quarter. North Carolina ranks 2nd nationally, behind Iowa, in the total number of hogs and pigs produced.
