Covid-19, farm workers, and food system resilience

The Covid-19 pandemic disrupted economies and labor markets. Governments issued stay-at-home orders for non-essential workers and activities, and unemployment rates rose despite programs and subsidies aimed at keeping workers on employer payrolls. The food system proved remarkably resilient, able to deliver an abundant supply and variety of food at pre-pandemic prices, with the exception of fluid milk and fresh meat in March-April 2020. Resilience is a measure of the capacity of a system to recover from an unexpected shock or event that knocks it off its trajectory.
