Riverkeeper Katy Langley Hunt says the Neuse River is facing a fish kill that has been going on for a month – something that hasn’t happened since the '90s. And that, she said, is evidence of a river truly in crisis. The kill has resulted in the death of hundreds of thousands of menhaden as well as a smaller number of other water life such as crabs and now, she said, even birds are starting to show up dead in the zone that covers 40 square miles. The affected area includes Carolina Pines, the mouth of Slocum Creek, Kennels Beach and as far upstream as Fairfield Harbour.
