OBSERVATIONS FROM THE FIELD Hurricane Zeta brought 4-6 inches of rain to the area last week delaying and possibly compromising soybean and corn harvests due to the excess rainfall. Small grain plantings have been impacted by oversaturated field conditions. – ALEXANDER, ALLEGHANY, ASHE, AVERY, BURKE, CALDWELL, MCDOWELL, MITCHELL, WATAUGA, WILKES
Above normal temperatures and widespread rainfall amounts from 2-4 inches brought minor flooding of saturated pastures, which receded quickly and are drying. Corn harvested continues for silage and grain. Christmas tree harvesting is very near. – JACKSON
A wet week brought one good day of fieldwork. Soybeans are deteriorating and having quality issues. – PERSON
Northern Johnston County received the first frost of the season today. Predicted to be cool enough in the morning, but warming up after Tuesday. – JOHNSTON
Wet conditions have delayed much of the soybean harvest as well as winter crop and cover plantings. – GRANVILLE
Cotton and peanut harvest continue as weather permits. Wheat planting progress continues. High wind and scattered showers delayed fieldwork in areas. – CRAVEN
The area received sporadic rainfall as harvest continued this week. – PAMLICO
The peanut crop has been rated average for this year. With the first threat of frost coming tonight, the Extension Service recommended digging to cease this past Friday. We expect the process to resume on Tuesday. – EDGECOMBE
Lower temperatures, reduced crop growth and heavy rains are keeping fields too wet to harvest soybeans or plant wheat, except on very well drained soils. Strawberry planting is complete. - PENDER
Soybean harvest continues as the weather allows. Farmers are reporting decent yields. Cotton harvest has finally begun. Defoliation will most likely wrap up this week ahead of potential frost. Land preparation for wheat continues as some growers have just started planting and others are almost complete. – ROBESON
