Notice something missing on the flight into the Asheville Airport? Or a drive down Long Shoals Road in South Asheville, or on a trip to Lake Julian? The pollutant-belching, coal-fired smokestack that has been a dubious landmark in Asheville for more than half a century is gone. Duke Energy's coal burning power plant was taken out of commission in January as the utility transitioned to natural gas for electricity production, resulting in a cleaner landscape, and cleaner air, said Duke spokesman Jason Walls.
