For the first time, NC senators pick a woman for majority leader

Senate Republicans named Sen. Kathy Harrington their caucus majority leader Monday, the first time a woman has held the position since its creation in 1977, the caucus said. Harrington, R-Gaston, will replace Sen.  Harry Brown, who did not seek re-election this year, as the North Carolina General Assembly gears up for session early next year. Brown had been in the post, which is one of the caucus' top leadership positions, since 2011.
