DECEMBER 2020 HOG REPORT

All hogs and pigs on North Carolina farms on December 1, 2020 totaled 9 million head, down 6% from September 1 and down 4% from last year. Market hogs, at 8.2 million head, were down 4% from last year and down 7% from last quarter. Breeding stock at 840,000 head was down 7% from December 1 of last year. The State’s pig crop during the September – November 2020 period totaled 4.6 million head, down 7% from the same period last year. These pigs were produced by 440,000 sows. Pigs saved per litter averaged at 10.50, which is down from the 10.55 pigs saved during the same quarter last year. North Carolina producers intend to farrow 440,000 sows during both the December 2020 – February 2021 and the March – May 2021 quarters. North Carolina ranks 3nd nationally, behind Iowa and Minnesota, in the total number of hogs and pigs produced.
