New research from Ph.D. candidate Karlinton Flores and Prestage Department of Poultry Science faculty members Adam Fahrenholz and Jesse Grimes looks at male turkey performance in response to feed pellet quality and biochar as a litter amendment: “Effect of pellet quality and biochar litter amendment on male turkey performance.”

Key findings include

  • “improving pellet quality by reducing the abundance of fines in the feed can improve commercial, Large White male turkey performance reared to market age” and
  • “There may be opportunities to use biochar as a litter amendment to improve turkey health and performance.”

The authors suggest that further research could “include testing poultry litter, with Miscanthus grass and biochar, for energy content and suitability for use as a biomass fuel.”

The paper is in press with Poultry Science (vol. 100, no. 1). It’s available online as an open access article and can be downloaded as a PDF.
