US Rep. Alma Adams: In response to recent SSA mishandling of personally identifiable information
Story Date: 2/11/2021

Source: US Rep. Alma Adams (NC-12th), 2/10/21

Dear Friend,

My office was recently informed of reports that a federal agency, the Social Security Administration, had inadvertently mailed personal information to the wrong recipients. Immediately, my staff reached out to the SSA Charlotte Field Office and was able to confirm that, due to employee error, this was indeed true.

In response to our inquiry, we have learned that the Social Security Administration Charlotte Field Office has already begun taking steps to contact the impacted individuals and secure the information, as quickly as possible.  In addition, they are addressing the situation by –

1. working to ensure all documents are returned or replaced,

2. assisting with blocking access to online Social Security records, and

3. providing credit monitoring and pursuing additional technologies, such as the use of video, as another method to improve service and eliminate these types of errors in the future.

Anyone who has received someone else’s information should contact their local Social Security office immediately and the officials there will provide guidance. The SSA office locator can be found at https://secure.ssa.gov/ICON/main.jsp or contact the Charlotte Social Security Office by telephone at 888-383-1598.

For reference, you can read the article and my call for an investigation HERE.

Sincerely,

Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D.
