NC March 2021 Hog Report

All hogs and pigs on North Carolina farms on March 1, 2021 totaled 8.5 million head, down 4% from December 1, 2020. Market hogs, at 7.7 million head, were down 7% from last year and down 5% from last quarter. Breeding stock totaled 830,000 head, down 5% from last year and down 1% from last quarter. The State’s pig crop during the December 2020 – February 2021 period totaled 4.41 million head, down 2% from the same period last year. These pigs were produced by 420,000 sows. Pigs saved per litter averaged 10.5 unchanged from the same quarter last year. North Carolina producers intend to farrow 430,000 sows during the March–May 2021 quarter and 440,000 sows during the June–August 2021 quarter. North Carolina ranks 3 rd nationally in the total number of hogs and pigs produced.
