A group of PETA supporters with signs showing a pig’s face next to the words “Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me?” will hand out free vegan ham sandwiches—from local restaurant NuVegan Cafe—tomorrow, just days ahead of Easter and just around the corner from The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the nation’s largest Catholic church.

Nearby, a new PETA ad—depicting Moses holding a bunch of carrots—reminds passersby that there are no exceptions to the commandment not to kill.

“'Thou shalt not kill’ must extend to everyone, including gentle, loving pigs,” says PETA Vice President Daniel Paden. “This Easter, PETA is encouraging Christians to celebrate the resurrection with a merciful vegan meal that leaves God’s creation in peace.”

The Bible clearly states that God’s design for the world was one in which humans and other animals coexisted peacefully and humans were caregivers—not killers. In Genesis 1:29, God says that the Earth’s seed-bearing plants and fruit will “be your food.”

But pigs killed for food experience hell on Earth: Workers chop their tails off, cut their teeth with pliers, castrate the males—all without painkillers—and slit their throats in slaughterhouses.

PETA’s “Thou Shalt Not Kill” ad is located at 3400 12th St. N.E.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
