NC June 2021 Hog Report

All hogs and pigs on North Carolina farms on June 1, 2021 totaled 8.3 million head, down 2% from last quarter and down 11% from last year. Market hogs, at 7.5 million head, were down 11% as well from last year. Breeding stock totaled 820,000 head, down 7% from last year.

The State’s pig crop during the March–May 2021 period totaled 4.53 million head, down 7% from the same period last year. These pigs were produced by 440,000 sows.

Pigs saved per litter averaged 10.3, which is down from the 10.6 pigs saved during the same quarter last year. North Carolina producers intend to farrow 430,000 sows during the June–August 2021 quarter and 415 sows during the September–November 2021 quarter. North Carolina currently ranks 3 rd nationally, behind Iowa and Minnesota, in the total number of hogs and pigs produced.
