Agriculturalists say recent weather extremes have spelled bad news for hay production, which could mean trouble for farmers who need it for their livestock. According to Andy Burlingham, livestock and forages extension agent with the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service in Pitt County, conditions since winter in eastern North Carolina and elsewhere in the country have threatened the hay supply. “The weather was very wet through late winter and into early spring,” Burlingham said. “Add on to that we had a late frost in April and a dry May. It set the grass back.”
