Aflatoxin takes as much as $126 million out of the U.S. peanut industry each year and may be responsible for significant losses even in years with low aflatoxin contamination rates. “Aflatoxin in U.S. peanuts is a major economic problem,” says USDA National Peanut Laboratory Research Lead Marshall Lamb. Lamb, speaking at the recent (virtual) American Peanut Research and Education Society (APRES) annual meeting, said all segments of the industry spend millions, “sometimes hundreds of millions) of dollars annually to ensure consumer safety.
