In the second quarter of 2021, both housing and lumber markets started plummeting from the record high levels. In May 2021, US housing starts were down about 3% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of about 1.68 million units, which is still about 35% up from last year. The Forest2Market’s southern yellow pine (SYP) lumber price index on July 2, 2021 was $566 per thousand board feet, down 53% from the record high in mid-May, 2021.
