Iowa officials approved incentives for Tyson Foods on Friday to help the company change how it slaughters pigs at its Columbus Junction plant. The Iowa Economic Development Authority approved about $540,000 for renovations on the killing floor. The company plans to switch to replace with carbon dioxide gas the electrical prods it currently uses knock out the pigs before they are killed.
Tyson will spend about $15 million to make the change, rearranging parts of the plant and buying some new machines.
