• China’s fruit imports and exports both registered substantial year-on-year growth in the first half of 2021. Between January and June, China imported 3.71 million metric tons of fruit worth USD$7.69 billion, corresponding to year-on-year increases of 2% and 21%, respectively. Considering that this year’s fruit imports by the end of June had already reached 75% of last year’s total import value, it is highly likely that 2021 will set a new record. The U.S. is one of The top 10 fruit exporters to China in the first half of 2021.
• Key economic data released by the National Bureau of Statistics of China showed that growth slowed in July from June, among which retail sales of consumer goods grew by 8.5% year-on-year to reach about USD$540 billion in July, down by 3.6% compared with June, although higher than that in the same period in 2019 and last year. Therefore, economists and analysts said that China is expected to intensify policy support to shore up economic growth and further boost the real economy.
• China’s Ambassador to U.S. Mr. Qin Gang met with the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman last week. It is "a critical chance for communication on US-China ties" that projects a strong readiness from both sides to deepen their understanding of one another, experts said.
• Recently, the U.S. has reopened the entry of foreign students. As the new semester approaches, it’s reported that Chinese students checking in at Shanghai Pudong Airport have lined up for nearly 1 kilometer.
• The National Health Commission of China announced that as of 19th August, a total of more than 1.88 billion doses of novel coronavirus vaccination were received nationwide. In addition, it's reported that more than 60 million teenagers aged 12 to 17 have been vaccinated across the country as of 13th. Currently, there are 29 high-risk areas and 94 medium-risk areas in China. The development of this wave is slowing down and the central government is trying to keep everything under control by the end of August.
