Here’s why Southerners refer to all soft drinks as 'coke'

Have you ever been offered a coke at someone's home and been asked, "What kind?" When you were a kid, did you ask to go to the store to get a coke and come home with a Dr Pepper or Mountain Dew? That's because many southerners use the brand name "Coke" as the generic, "coke," meaning any soft drink.
