Source: NC AGROMEDICINE INSTITUTE, 9/8/21 Updated information about the distribution of COVID-related PPE
to farmers, FLCs, and farmworkers, coordinated by the NC Agromedicine
Institute. =
Due to the constantly evolving spread of COVID generally and the
Delta variant specifically, the Institute is working in real-time responsivity to
ensure that immediate needs are met, rather than starting out with a fixed plan
for geographic distribution that might risk essential supplies ending up
somewhere other than where they are most needed. =
Which counties are in need is changing weekly and sometimes
daily. The most recent outbreaks among farmworkers were in Hertford,
Green, and Wilson Counties. =
Growers are required to inform NCDOL/ASH if one or more of their
workers tests positive. =
Both NCDOL and NDOC are referring growers, FLC and workers to
the Institute for PPE needs, and the Institute is regularly communicating the
availability of PPE through its own channels. =
Deliveries have begun today! Supplies go out ASAP after a request is received – usually the same day a worker is known to be positive and as soon as the Institute knows how many workers are on the farm in question. Institute staff generally are delivering PPE kits in person, directly to the farm in need. (Round-trip driving time can be approximately two to ten hours.)
- When a request or question is received, Institute staff inquire about the number of workers and about general health status and resources. For example, is there a current outbreak? Does the operation have a relationship with a local farmworker health outreach team and/or local health department? Has the operation already received COVID educational resources in English and Spanish? Information will be shared about the supplies available through the FLPG – each worker receives a bag with 1 box of disposable face covers (50/box), 1 pair of safety glasses and at least 6 pairs of disposable gloves. The kits also include COVID prevention education materials in English/Spanish. Staff will also inquire as to whether there is a need for additional supplies (e.g., hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, cloth face covers, thermometers). Needed supplies may be added to each delivery as long as supplies remain available.
- Messaging will
reinforce the need for continued use of disposable face covers and safety
glasses during transport and other areas where social distancing is not
possible. Growers will also receive information on cost share programs
available through the Institute for migrant housing internet connectivity,
sanitation equipment/supplies and transportation.
- Employers whose workers are in need should contact the NC Agromedicine Institute – either the main number ((252)
744-1008) or Robin Tutor Marcom directly (office
252-744-1008, cell 919-880-4225, or email tutorr@ecu.edu). When calling, you will be asked
for contact information (ie, name, farm name and location/ address, phone
number and email).
- If your
organization is able to help fund these efforts, please contact Robin
Tutor!
