NC Sept. production report: NC tobacco, corn, cotton, largest increases in production estimates

“The September 1 crop production report indicates a yield increase in North Carolina’s soybean, cotton and peanut crops as compared to the August 1 forecast.” said Dee Webb, North Carolina State Statistician. 

“We thank the farmers and producers for taking time to respond, especially during this busy time of the year. They ensured quality data was provided which ensured USDA NASS could publish estimates based on the most accurate information.” 

Corn for grain
• Yield estimate of 142 bushels per acre is up 29 bushels from last year’s yield of 113 bushels per acre. 
• Production forecast at 129.2 million bushels is up 20% from the 107.4 million bushels produced last year. 
• Harvested acres projected at 910,000 are down from the 950,000 acres harvested in 2020. 

Cotton
• Yield estimate of 809 pounds per acre is up 50 pounds from last year’s yield of 759 pounds per acre. 
• Production forecast at 590,000 bales is up 13% from last year’s production of 522,000 bales. 
• Harvested acres projected at 350,000 are up from the 330,000 acres harvested in 2020.

Peanuts 
• Yield estimate of 3,900 pounds per acre is down 100 pounds from last year’s estimate. 
• Production forecast at 440.7 million pounds is up 4% from last year’s production of 424.0 million. 
• Harvested acres projected at 113,000 acres are up from the 106,000 acres harvested in 2020. 

Soybeans
• Yield estimate of 39 bushels per acre is up 2 bushels from last year’s yield of 37 bushels. 
• Production forecast at 63.6 million bushels is up 9% from last year’s production of 58.1 million bushels. • Harvested acres projected at 1.63 million acres are up 60,000 acres from last year.

Flue-Cured Tobacco
• Yield estimate of 2,000 pounds per acre is up 200 pounds from last year. 
• Production forecast at 240 million pounds per acre is up 31% from last year’s production of 183.6 million pounds. 
• Harvested acres projected at 120,000 acres are up 18,000 acres from 2020.
