Haywood County is still recovering from the Aug. 17 flooding caused by Tropical Storm Fred. The flooding devastated the region, killing six people and causing millions in property damage. The federal response to the flooding, including the role of U.S. Rep. Madison Cawthorn, has come under scrutiny. Some residents describe the response as inadequate, while others go so far as to call it downright absent. Just last week, critics rallied outside the Haywood County courthouse to protest what they consider Cawthorn’s lackluster response, along with other doubts about the congressman’s actions and abilities. A dueling crowd gathered in support of Cawthorn.
