The Town of Benson has erected a mule statue at the intersection of Highways NC-27 and NC-50, sculpted from Greenville artist Jonathan Bowling.  After over a year of research and deliberation, the Benson Art Advisory Board chose the mule to represent Benson's farming heritage and the Mule Days Celebration.  The mule represents Benson's "drive into the future" and represents the agricultural roots of the town as it grows.

The statue is composed of retired tools, wrenches, cogs, gears, and other pieces of agricultural machinery.  The reuse of farm implements in the statue's composition also contributes to the representation of Benson's strong agricultural heritage.  NCDOT Division 4 also contributed to the project through its roadside enchancement and allowing the sculpture under the NCDOT Right of Way Art Policy.  Mr. Bowling, the artist, grew up on a farm in Kentucky, but has lived in eastern NC since the 1990s; many of his unique sculptures can be viewed in NC and all along the east coast.
