North Carolina crop production estimates show significant increases

“The October 1 crop production report indicates yield increases for North Carolina’s corn, cotton and peanut crops as compared to the September 1 forecast.” said Dee Webb, North Carolina State Statistician. “NC farmers’ responses to the USDA NASS survey ensured quality data was provided allowing estimates to be published based on the most accurate information. We thank the farmers and producers for taking time to respond, especially during this busy time of the year.”

Corn for grain
• Yield estimate of 146 bushels per acre is up 33 bushels from last year’s yield of 113 bushels per acre.
• Production forecast at 132.9 million bushels is up 25% from the 106.2 million bushels produced last year.
• Harvested acres projected at 910,000 are down from the 940,000 acres harvested in 2020.

Cotton
• Yield estimate of 864 pounds per acre is up 105 pounds from last year’s yield of 759 pounds per acre.
• Production forecast at 630,000 bales is up 21% from last year’s production of 522,000 bales.
• Harvested acres projected at 350,000 are up from the 330,000 acres harvested in 2020.

Peanuts
• Yield estimate of 4,000 pounds per acre is up 100 pounds from last year’s estimate.
• Production forecast at 452 million pounds is up 10% from last year’s production of 409.5 million pounds.
• Harvested acres projected at 113,000 acres are up from the 105,000 acres harvested in 2020. Soybeans
• Yield estimate of 39 bushels per acre is up 1 bushel from last year’s yield of 38 bushels.
• Production forecast at 63.6 million bushels is up 7% from last year’s production of 59.7 million bushels.
• Harvested acres projected at 1.63 million acres are up 60,000 acres from last year.

Flue-Cured Tobacco
• Yield estimate of 2,000 pounds per acre is up 200 pounds as compared to last year.
• Production forecast at 240 million pounds per acre is up 31% from last year’s production of 183.6 million pounds.
• Harvested acres projected at 120,000 acres are up 18,000 acres from 2020.
