Junior Livestock Sale of Champions draws $183,000 for youth- money goes to scholarships and winners

Junior winners in the N.C. State Fair livestock shows drew $183,000 for the top steers, barrows, lambs, goats and turkeys in the Junior Livestock Sale of Champions at the N.C. State Fair on Oct. 22.

“It is great to see our North Carolina companies show such strong support of our junior livestock youth,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “The money raised will go a long way towards college educations, scholarships and educational outreach.

The grand champion junior market steer was shown by Sloane Hinnant of Wilson, with the winning bid of $20,000 placed by Farm Credit Associations of NC, Powers Great American Midway, Gary Welch Cattle Co. and Lickskillet Cattle Co.

The reserve grand champion and grand champion Got to Be NC junior market steer was shown by Michelle Hartman of Walnut Cove. It was purchased for $23,000 by Farm Bureau Insurance and SAS Ag Tech.

Farm Bureau Insurance and Farm Credit Associations of NC purchased the grand champion junior market lamb and grand champion Got to Be NC junior market lamb for $18,500. The lamb was shown by Maggie Glass of Belhaven.

Tractor Supply Co. purchased the reserve grand champion junior market lamb, shown by Emma Britt of Whitakers for $13,000.

Farm Bureau Insurance purchased the grand champion junior market meat goat, shown by Scarlett Denning of Newton Grove, for $15,000.

Farm Bureau Insurance, Iron Horse Auction Co., Meacham Logging Inc., Millstone Consultants and Advisors, LLC, and Senator Tom McInnis purchased the grand champion Got to Be NC junior market meat goat shown by Laura Jessup of Coleridge for $16,000.

Farm Bureau Insurance purchased the reserve grand champion junior market meat goat for $10,000. It was exhibited by Katelyn Hewitt of Reidsville.

Hannah Cooper of Hertford showed the grand champion junior market barrow, which was purchased for $18,000 by the Prestage Farms, Hog Slat Inc., N.C. Pork Council, SAS Ag Tech, Land of Promise Farms.

The grand champion Got to Be NC junior market barrow shown by Gracy Grasty of Hurdle Mills was purchased for $20,000 by N.C. Pork Council, Hog Slat, Smithfield Foods, Agri Supply, Prestage Frams, Mt. Olive Livestock and the NC Soybean Producers Association.

The reserve grand champion junior market barrow, was shown by Mackenzie Cox of Richlands. It was purchased for $15,000 by Prestage Farms, the N.C. Pork Council and Smithfield Foods.

Talley Farms purchased the grand champion market turkey shown by Claire Keeter of Enfield for $8,000. Farm Bureau and the N.C Soybean Producers Association purchased the reserve champion turkey shown by Hattie Jo Powell of Four Oaks for $6,500.
